The Challenge

Malaria, one of the world’s oldest and deadliest diseases, is believed to have killed half of the human population that’s ever lived, and has affected every continent, except for Antarctica. Many people in countries like Venezuela, Paraguay, and Australia are at a high risk of contracting the disease, which kills a child every two minutes. When malaria falls off of the political agenda, funding is put on pause and the disease – which has approached eradication – reappears. In a crowded space, we needed to find an innovative way to turn a message into action and inspire people in the fight to end malaria.

The Story

To help lead the charge in malaria eradication, we used “deep fake” technology for good to create the world’s first mobile web petition users “sign” with their voice. The campaign prompts visitors to go to MalariaMustDie.com and literally speak out and sign a voice petition that’s activated with the words “Malaria Must Die”. We spread awareness of the Voice Petition through a short film featuring soccer legend David Beckham. In the video, Beckham invites people to add their voices to the petition in nine languages using the actual voices of real malaria survivors. All of the captured voices were then presented to world leaders at the UN General Assembly, helping secure the multi-billion dollar investment needed to help end the disease. Forever.
